The Irish came to Lowell in ever increasing numbers, mostly as laborers. Unlike the Yankee mill girls who were housed in quarters owned by the corporations, the Irish settled in an undeveloped area about an acre in size. The Acre, as it became knowns, was the of the one of the first Roman Catholic churches north of Boston, St. Patrick's, which was built of wood in 1831 and was replaced by a stone structure in 1853.
